"Error in site javascript" for every app

Just getting started with version 6 - I'm using C6.3 with Nettalk 6.55 - and for every example app I have tried I get this message in the browser "error in site javascript".  It stops the app right at the beginning.

Have I made some Nettalk 6 newbie error?

try deleting all .gz files from your \web\scripts folder

That got rid of the error msg but now the app hangs just after displaying the company name.

I am going to upgrade to v7 now anyway - and see how it goes in that one.
