Ron,

Good to hear from you and good to hear about your good experience.

If your server is open to the internet, and to the intranet, how are you protecting it?
and - are you still using Port 88?

Thanks.

Bruce,

Thanks for the reassurance.

In the past (before the upsurge of device portability and Wifi) I dabbled with several of the free brands of SQL (MySQL, Pervasive, Firebird, MS Express), but returned to TPS for simplicity.

What SQL brands seem to be currently preferred by users of Clarion and NetTalk Webserver?

Thanks.

Your suggestions on the practicalities and wisdom of this proposal will be welcomed.

Using:
- Clarion 8 for local apps
- the latest NetTalk Webserver e.g. 7.18 producing the web interface for the Intranet AND the Internet

For a small business with a low transaction volume, the server:
- hosts all Clarion TPS data
- is connected to the in-house network
- AND runs the NetTalk Webserver
- AND is connected to the internet.

In-house:
- Some users run Clarion 8 apps over the intranet.
- Some users on the intranet access the data using the NetTalk web pages

From outside:
- Two users might use Remote Desktop to run Clarion8 apps in or out of business hours.
- Travelling sale staff will use NetTalk web pages over the internet for queries and ordering
- Internet sales to the general public AND account customers will use NetTalk web pages
- phone sales as usual

Both:
- we can expect desktop computers, laptops, tablets and PDAs to be used by both staff and customers
- in-house we could expect WiFi to be used for some devices
- from outside we could expect internet users coming in over landlines or the phone system.

Next:
- some travelling sales staff wonder about using their PDAs barcode scanning abilities to speed up order entry when
they are on-site

Other:
- as usual, there will be interfacing with MSOffice and PDFs and Email, both from in-house and outside.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Good news ... but ...

Clean installation of Windows 8-64 Pro -- and web33 Alias Drop List works in IE10!    Great!
Also Works with IE10 on Windows7-64.  Also Great!

Tried reloading Windows 8 (but preserving settings and applications) over the top of my troublesome W8 work HD, but still have a problem with web33 Drop List.   Sad!   :(

So will now strip my work HD and do a clean installation of W8 and reload all applications, etcetera.

Many thanks to Bruce and the team.   :)

Thanks, Bruce.  I will follow up on this idea after I finish these next tests over the next few days.

What I have done now is, on the same machine using another HD, a clean installation of the same Windows8Pro64.

Immediately after W8 installation, the version of IE10:  10.0.9200.16384
Ran the same copy of web33.exe I am using for all of these tests.
The Alias/drop List worked.  Hooray!

Then did a full Windows update (569MB).
The version of IE10 is now:  10.0.9200.16540
Ran the same copy of web33.exe I am using for all of these tests.
The Alias/drop List worked.  Hooray, again!

That does seem to point to some contamination of IE10 on my work hard disc.

Next, I will load and test progressively after introducing
* MS Office
* free AVG .
* Firewall settings
* ...

and will let you know how I go.

-------------------
If my IE10 is contaminated, I do not know how it alone can be refreshed.

Thanks, Bruce.
I appreciate knowing that you have no problem with W8 and IE10, but so far I have no success.

A quick summary of my efforts:
I DO have all Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10 and Clarion 8 and Clarion third party updates installed.

What works for me is if I boot from an up-to-date HD running Windows 7 Pro with the latest IE10 - the same IE10 version as on my Windows 8 Pro HD.
On each hard disc I can run a copy of web33.exe.
The Alias drop down seems to work as expected under Windows 7  but not under Windows 8.

On the W8 HD, I have also run the latest Firefox, Chrome, and Safari, and each seems to handle the web33.exe Alias drop down as expected.

From my internet research on Microsoft and other sites, it seems that IE10 is 'built-in' in W8 and older versions of IE cannot be installed alongside, or over the top of IE10.
Also, it seems unlikely IE10 can be -removed- from W8.

I did download an IE10 installation file from Microsoft, thinking I could run it over the top of the existing IE10, but it will not run as it says that there is a newer version of IE10 currently installed.

In IE10, I have used the F12 key to experiment with the Browser modes offered, but this approach was not useful.

So, it seems that I am stuck with the IE10 that is on the machine.

I will load web33 on to another user's machine to see if it works.
Even if it does, it seems I will not be able to go further on mine.
My alternative is to not use the drop-down control in my web program.

Thanks for your efforts.

Bruce,
I don't think you are missing anything.
I appreciate the ideas you have given, and applied them, with the negative results below.
With my lack of detailed understanding and overview, I assumed that the demonstration examples would run if I simply compiled them as-is.

Hardware: Intel-I7. 16GB RAM, 64bit
Display adapter: Windows Device manager reports: AMD Radeon HD6450
OS: Windows8Pro - all "important updates" applied
On my installation: Control Panel/Advanced System Properties/Performance/Settings-Performance Options/Visual Effects
I have checked: "Let Windows choose what's best for my computer"
And on the advanced tab:  Adjust for best performance of Programs
AntiVirus:  free AVG
Internet Explorer10.0.9200.16540
By default, in my IE10, InternetOptions/Advanced, "Enable Smart Screen Filter" is checked.
Clarion 8.8658
All updates for all of my Capesoft products have been applied.

New installation of NT7.08 and using the web33 example:

(1)
No changes by me to the web33 example.
Result: working my way down the Aliases dropdown list simply selecting each name in turn and got down to Jono and IE crashed.

(2)
Went to: PageHeaderTag/Extensions/NetTalkWebMenuExtension(3)/Menu/
changed:  Chrome(deprecated) to: DoubleDrop.
Result: worked my way down the drop-down list to Gregory and then IE crashed.

(3)
Then, went to: PageHeaderTag/Extensions/NetTalkWebMenuExtension(3)/CSS Classes/MenuBarStyle
changed: 'nt-menu"'  to: 'nt-menu'
Result: worked my way down the drop-down list to Gregory and then IE crashed as before.
"Internet Explorer has stopped working"

Also, got same results with IE crashing when I tried each of these options in turn:

(4)
Went to: PageHeaderTag/Extensions/NetTalkWebMenuExtension(3)/Menu/
Then changed to Task Panel
Result: got down to Eliza.

(5)
Went to: PageHeaderTag/Extensions/NetTalkWebMenuExtension(3)/Menu/
Then changed to Accordion
Result: got down to James.

(6)
Went to: PageHeaderTag/Extensions/NetTalkWebMenuExtension(3)/Menu/
Then changed to XP (deprecated)
Result: got down to Charles.

(7)
Went to: PageHeaderTag/Extensions/NetTalkWebMenuExtension(3)/Menu/
Then changed to Mobile
Result: got down to Leroy.

Because Chrome and Firefox seem to behave, I suspect something is odd about IE10.

However, new customers may be using new hardware with W8 and IE10, so my feeling is if I cannot get good behaviour on my system with the drop

menu, I will have to redesign my program interface.

All ideas welcome.

Thanks.

Wolfgang  -

you do not mention the browser and version you are using.

Is there a chance that there is a link to the IE10 error I get (refer to my latest post) ?

Testing:
Compile web33 example with no changes.
Select: Alias
From the drop down menu, try selecting each name in turn.
Internet Explorer stops working and produces an error message box.

Firefox (20.0.1) and Chrome (Version 26.0.1410.64 m) work ok.

I doubt that we can budge Mighty Microsoft ...

res://ieframe.dll/acr_error.htm#,http://127.0.0.1:88/FilterAlias

W8 C8 NetTalk7.07 and IE10 all updates installed.

Trying to use Drop method in my app gives error as shown at top.
ditto when trying to run web33 example.

Testing:
Running the web33 example after compiling as-is.
clicking on menu option: Aliases
Then clicking on the Mail box Drop produces the error.
Clicking on the drop twice produces no result usually and the third click may produce the error or the drop down as expected.
Holding down the left mouse button a little longer almost guarantees the error coming up sooner.

All thoughts appreciated.
Thanks.

Possibly.

I think I remember there was such a problem with one of the versions of Windows.
Try installing a printer from the drivers supplied with Windows, even if none is physically connected to the server.

When I get a new computer, this is one of the things I ensure I do before I start using the computer.

To reinforce and reply to Don's advice:

You know the mobile screen is very limited in row width and height.
Make a mockup - perhaps a text box in Word using appropriate fonts and font sizes.  Use your ruler line, if this helps.
Are you designing this to be used in Portrait or Landscape mode?
Test your placement of prompts and fields by typing in the appropriate number of characters in the positions that you would like to see them.

This gives you a starting point.

Go back to NetTalk and start looking at how many characters you are allowing to be displayed.
e.g.  In your table you may have a string(80) but on screen you may make the field width to show only 25 without manually scrolling)

You have to measure and fit all text field characters and buttons on the screen.

Web Server - Ask For Help / Re: Upgrade NT7 to NT701
« on: January 01, 2013, 01:59:25 AM »
A minor update to any comments of mine concerning the 'out of sync' message as I went from NT7.01 to NT7.02:

After doing the installation of NT7.02, I went to my application and deleted the web folder.

Then I did a fresh compile of my application and the web folder was automatically remade, and I have had no more version problems.

Also, since I want to ensure I get a completely fresh remake and compile, I first run a simple batch file so I can be sure I am starting with only the DCT and the APP.  This is my 'belt and braces' approach.  It might be regarded as overkill.

These are the files I delete:

 *.clw
 *.ini
 *.cwproj
 *.exp
 *.inc
 *.shp
 *.sln
 *.obj
 *.rsc
 *.xml
 *.lib
 *.map

Perhaps I should add a caution:  I am compiling one app to produce one exe -- no DLLs.

I'll second that.

Thank you, Bruce, and the team.
